Jewish Comedy
Most Jewish comics rely on stereotypes—to the point where you get the idea they kinda wish they weren’t Jewish in the first place.
Not Joel. After nine years in Jewish day school, six summers at Jewish camp, and a stint in the Israeli Army, Joel’s actually glad to be a Jew.
But that doesn’t mean he thinks we’re not crazy.
Unlike other Jewish comedians, Joel finds humor in the absurd details of Jewish life—a life he himself has led since nursery school at the local JCC. In his clean, hip style, Joel pokes loving fun at our people’s experiences—experiences like the joys of hosting gentiles for Passover (“Where’s dessert?” they always ask. “You’ve gotta go find it,” we reply.), the trickiness of El Al security guards, and the challenges of raising Jewish children (he’s got three of ‘em).
Best of all, Joel’s humor is never degrading to our people. Instead, Joel’s love of Judaism shines through in every performance. Audiences across the spectrum of observance and knowledge find Joel’s comedy positive and hilarious.
But don’t take our word for it. Take theirs:
“Chasnoff delights audiences by poking loving fun at the trials, the joys – the sheer oddities, for that matter – of growing up Jewish. What distinguishes Chasnoff from the classic Borscht Belt comic is his affectionate use of the practices and experiences of real Jews, not the usual American Jewish stereotypes.”
-Moment Magazine
“Chasnoff’s material for his comedy and his strong Jewish identity are inextricably intertwined. His comedy reflects a high level of knowledge that Jews across the spectrum – from secular to Orthodox – can relate to.”
-The Jerusalem Post
